MOVE TO BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA-”SPORTS CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH”

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

shannon-holmes-011_ppac1If you are planning a move to Birmingham, Alabama, you will learn very quickly that you are entering the “Sports Capital of the South”.  While other cities may try to claim that title, residents of the Birmingham area will confirm that passion for their teams reaches a whole new level here.  We breed it into our young, and convert those who enter our city gates with contagious enthusiasm.  For sports fans, Birmingham, Alabama is a great place to live!

If you love “high octane” sports, head to the nearby Talladega Superspeedway for the Talladega 500.  The Tom Cruise movie Days of Thunder filmed here, as well as the Will Ferrell movie Talladega Nights.

If you prefer to hit the track yourself, then a trip to the Barber Motorsports Track, and also the Vintage Motorsports Museum, might be fun.

Hunting, boating, and fishing enthusiasts are certain to enjoy the new Bass Pro Shop, which recently opened in Leeds.

Because of our wonderful climate, tennis is very popular in our area.  In fact, Birmingham just hosted the prestigious Davis Cup at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center.

Birmingham has also previously participated in the Olympics when Regions Park served as a satellite venue for soccer during the 1996 games in Atlanta, which is only about 2 hours away.

With the  Regions Charity Classic, which is the #1 Champions Tour event, being hosted each year at Ross Bridge, and the Robert Trent Jones Course at Oxmoor Valley, high quality public courses are available for golfers.  Numerous other beautiful golfing venues can be found throughout the area, both public and private.

The SEC Baseball Championship is played here each spring at fabulous Regions Park in Hoover. The Birmingham Barons minor league team, affiliated with the Chicago White Sox, calls this their home field.  Their most famous former player is Michael Jordan.

Hoover High School’s Buccaneers football team of MTV’s TWO-A-DAYS,  also plays most of its big games at Regions Park.  Once again, the mighty Hoover Bucs brought home the Alabama High School 6-A State Championship for 2009, with a 14-1 record

Only 45 minutes away, Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, was host to the 2010 Iron Bowl, one of the biggest football rivalries in the nation, between theAuburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide.  Alternating between Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama, (about 2 hours from Birmingham), and Tuscaloosa , most Birmingham residents would agree that the Iron Bowl is the biggest sports day of the year in the state of Alabama.  Jim Caple of ESPN has placed the Iron Bowl at #38 on his list of 101 THINGS ALL SPORTS FANS MUST EXPERIENCE BEFORE THEY DIE.  True to its reputation, the 2010 Iron Bowl had another legendary finish, with  Auburn University narrowly defeating the University of Alabama. Riding on this game was the SEC Championship, which Auburn won, and a shot at the 2010 National Championship.

The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner is Cam Newton of Auburn University.

The SEC Champions for the 2010 season are the Auburn Tigers.

The 2010 BCS National Champonship played on January 10, 2011 in Glendale, Arizona was won by Auburn University with a score of  22 -19.  Congratulations Coach Gene Chizik, and the mighty Auburn Tigers! Only one other time in history has a state had back to back National Championships. The retiring National Champions were the Alabama Crimson Tide.

In 2011, the Crimson Tide of Alabama came back to win the National Championship for the second time in 3 years.

Birmingham, you may want to visit theAlabama Sports Hall of Fame.  With such sports giants as Joe Louis, Willie Mays, Paul “Bear” Bryant, Bart Starr, and Heisman Trophy winners Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan, a trip to this museum should be a special treat for the avid sports fan.

Other local area teams such as the UAB Blazers and the Samford Bulldogs, currently being coached by Pat Sullivan, provide even more enjoyment of college athletics.

With nationally ranked collegiate teams in nearly every sport from gymnastics to football, and the high level of high school athletics as well,  the Birmingham area has much to offer in the way of sports.

Whether as a participant, or a spectator,  opportunities abound for sports fans in Birmingham, Alabama. Move here and you, too, will catch the excitement!

BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA REAL ESTATE MARKET NAMED to “STRONGEST” and “FASTEST GROWING” LISTS

Friday, May 1st, 2009

shannon-holmes-011_ppac2In May of 2008 Money Magazine named Birmingham, Alabama to the #3 spot on its list of “10 Fastest Growing Real Estate Markets”. For those moving to Birmingham,  the lowest property taxes in the nation (according to The Land Report 10/27/08), and the amenities and lifestyle offered versus what you get for the money in many other markets,  may come as a very pleasant surprise.

On January 9, 2009, Forbes named Birmingham one of the “25 Strongest Housing Markets”.  In the November 2008 issue of SmartMoney magazine, Birmingham’s real estate market was listed in the #2 spot of the top 25 cities “ready to rebound”.   To buy a home now,  in what is one of the nation’s more stable markets, could be a real opportunity.

Individually, the suburbs of Birmingham continue to draw national attention by making several of the “best places to live“ and best places to retire” lists. Hoover, Helena, and Vestavia Hills, Alabama  have all  been named.  Most recently, Vestavia Hills was named to Relocate-America’s Top 100 List for 2009.

From Aldridge Gardens to the Birmingham Zoo, the Birmingham area literally offers every amenity from A to Z.  Investors and homebuyers should take notice of all the recent buzz about the Birmingham Real Estate Market.

According to the Alabama Center for Real Estate monthly report, residential home sales have gone up significantly.  The Center’s latest report stated that the Alabama Housing Affordability Index was at its highest level in years.

Birmingham, Alabama was named eighth out of the top ten real estate markets nationally for having the shortest supply of homes available in April of 2012. We are now beginning to see multiple offers on properties priced competively.

There is pent up demand for houses as the public perception has been to wait for lower prices, and still lower interest rates. Rental rates are up, and in most markets it is still cheaper to buy than rent. However, home affordability has increased significantly, and has made many rethink trying to predict the “bottom” of the market.  With these factors in place, buying a home now may be a sound decision.

Birmingham, Alabama and its many suburbs currently have wonderful inventory from which to choose.  For those who have managed their credit well,  great opportunities exist.  Whether investing, “moving up”, or purchasing a first home,  the ”cost to own”  is down, and the chance to get that “dream home” may be more within reach than ever before.

USE THE SEARCH BOX AT THE TOP RIGHT TO FIND INFORMATION ON A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE IN BEAUTIFUL HOOVER ALABAMA.

Amazing affordability and a wealth of options and amenities in real estate make Hoover, Alabama one of America’s best places to liveMoney Magazine named Hoover to its “Top 100 Best Places to Live” for 2006. Forbes just ranked Birmingham #28 on its list of “Most Affordable Cities” for 2009, which draws national attention to the surrounding market when homeowners are considering a move. No matter what needs or price range you may have, Hoover has it all!

One popular choice is the tree-lined, traditional neighborhood of Green Valley. This charming area surrounds the lovely Star Lake and Hoover Country Club. Improvements to the 6,776 yards long golf course at Hoover Country Club began on March 15th , 2010. Three holes have been redesigned, new lakes have been put in, and numerous other upgrades made to make this area even more beautiful. Situated on large lots, the homes in this community are nearby to schools, shopping, and entertainment.  You may want to put your guests up at the impressive Wynfrey Hotel,  then take them out on the town.  Whether spending an afternoon at the library, an evening at the local movie cineplex, or dining out, this area is just minutes away from it all!

If a new home is what you seek, then The Preserve may appeal to you with its Town Center retail area, Clubhouse, and neighborhood pool. Homes in this area range from cottages to manors. Each year a Jazz Festival is hosted here.  Immediately adjacent to this community is the Moss Rock Preserve, a favorite place for hiking and nature watching.

Another new home community is the fabulous Ross Bridge, with home prices between the $200,000′s to over $1 million. Ross Bridge has the great honor of having been named, “Best Community in America” for 2010. Within this development you will find a shopping area, the incredible castle-like Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort and Spa, and the Robert Trent Jones golf course which each year is host to the Regions Charity Golf Classic ranked as the #1 Champions Tour event by Sports Illustrated.

Two of Hoover’s newest communities are the highly popular Chace Lake in the Riverchase area, and Water’s Edge at Bent River. Both offer great amenities such as a community clubhouse or cabana, and pool.

Just off of  Highway 150, and convenient to shopping and schools, is the beautiful Trace Crossings. Whether you desire a view lot or a lake home,  this community can accommodate your needs.  Homes in this area surround Trace Crossings Elementary,  Hoover High Freshman Campus, and Hoover High School (recently featured on MTV’s Two A Days for its outstanding football program).

Another wonderful area is Greystone, a sprawling community of magnificent homes encompassing two world class golf courses.  The Greystone Founders Golf Course was formerly home to what is now the Regions Charity Golf Championship.  Located off the Highway 280 Corridor, and close to nearly every amenity,  these neighborhoods are sure to delight.  From garden home to golf course mansion,  this highly popular area has much to offer.

All this and more can be found in the beautiful city of Hoover, whose motto is “Hoover’s Happening!”

Recently TV’s Craig Ferguson performed at The Comedy Club in Hoover,  a large suburb of Birmingham, Alabama.   “I have NEVER seen a place more MISREPRESENTED  in my LIFE “ ,  he said.   “It’s all MODERN and everything.  The people are SO FRIENDLY,  and I had the BEST Philly cheesesteak sandwich I have EVER had in my life!  I’M MOVING HERE!” ,  he exclaimed.

As I sat in that Saturday night audience enjoying his show,  I wondered how many others HAD NO IDEA  what  WORLD CLASS AMENITIES  Birmingham,  and its outlying areas,  have to offer.  From Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa to the five star Highlands Bar and Grill Restaurant;  from the boutiques of Homewood and the Villages of Mountain Brook,  to the fabulous shopping of  The Summit,  Riverchase Galleria,  and Brookwood Mall;  from SOUTHERN LIVING and SOUTHERN ACCENTS magazines toPepper Place design centerBirmingham Jefferson Civic Center to Regions Park; from the incredible estates of Mountain Brook to the explosion of new home communities , such as Greystone, along the 280 corridor;  from top doctors to UAB Medical CenterBirmingham is one of the nation’s best kept secrets for amenities versus affordability.

More good news for the Birmingham real estate market is that Birmingham, Alabama now ranks #4 on the nation’s list of places for a home price rebound, according to the Birmingham Business Journal.

Birmingham was just named #46 on the list of the country’s largest metropolitan areas for quality of life, based on “well-rounded markets with healthy economies, moderate costs of living, light traffic, impressive housing stocks and high-powered educational systems” ( Birmingham ranks No. 46 for quality of life – Birmingham Business Journal).

Birmingham, and its surrounding communities have it all: great homes,  fine dining and entertainment,  incomparable sports,  amazing shopping,  terrific schools,  world-renowned  medical facilities,  breathtaking scenery,  and unbelievable weather, in a city that mixes trendy with traditional.

Friendly and sophisticated,  Birmingham has all the amenities of Atlanta or LA ,  without the never-ending traffic congestion,  or exorbitant cost of living.   Whether your style is “English Cottage“,  or “Tudor Castle”,  you will find that Birmingham truly is a “Magic City”.
